Scheme of electro-catalytic reforming of natural gas in the SOFC equipped with the external oxy-dry-steam reformer - heat exchanger

Area of applications

The developed composite catalysts, as prototypes of anode materials in SOFCs, with a suitable catalytic activity and resource characteristics in the processes of oxidative reforming of hydrocarbon fuel (natural gas) will be used in the design of the SOFCs’ anode electrodes at the I. M. Frantsevich Institute for Problems of Materials Sciences of NASU.
The developed honeycomb catalysts with high thermal stability can be used in the external reformer-heat exchanger, in which the natural gas (methane) and oxidant (air, oxygen) are heated up to SOFC operating temperature (700оС) by products of electro-catalytic oxidation of natural gas in SOFC (CO2, H2O) and oxy-dry-steam reforming of methane takes place with the formation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide that are also fuels for the SOFC.

Brief description

Ni-containing composites based on Y(Sc,Ce)-stabilized zirconia with high catalytic activity and resource characteristics (resistance to coke deposition and sulfur compounds, regeneration ability) in the processes of oxidative reforming of methane (steam reforming, integrating process of tri-reforming of methane), which are simulate the electrochemical oxidation of the hydrocarbon fuel in the SOFCs’ anode space.
Active Ni/La,Ce/Al2O3 catalysts supported on cordierite (2Al2O3×2MgO×5SiO2) honeycomb monoliths for the process of oxy-dry-steam reforming of natural gas in the external reformer-heat exchanger.

Expected properties

Increasing the stability and service life of the SOFC will be provided by the use of anode materials with optimal composition, which are characterized with high catalytic activity and resource characteristics in the processes of oxidative reforming of natural gas at SOFC operating temperatures (600–700°С). Increasing the coefficient of SOFC efficiency will be ensured by the use of external reformer - heat exchanger based on developed honeycomb catalysts.

Advantages

The catalytic activity of the developed composites in the processes of oxidative reforming of methane is comparable to the known catalytic systems based on transition metals and stabilized zirconia (ScSZ, YSZ, CeSZ).
The productivity of the developed honeycomb catalysts in the tri-reforming of natural gas exceeds known industrial catalysts (HT R 67 та ICI 57-7).

Competitors

Companies UTC Power (USA), Nuvera Fuel Cells (USA - Italy), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (USA), University of Alberta (Canada) are leaders in the field of development and production of SOFCs.
Companies Haldor-Topsoe (Denmark) and Imperial Chemical Industry (England) are leading manufacturers of catalysts for oxy-dry-steam reforming of natural gas.

Project development

The composite catalysts based on stabilized zirconia (10Sc1CeSZ) and transition metals (Ni, Cu), modified by platinum group metals (Pt, Pd) were synthesized. The catalytic performance of these composites in the steam reforming and tri-reforming of methane is investigated at SOFC operating temperatures (600–700°С).
Honeycomb catalysts with high activity and stability in the process of oxy-dry-steam reforming of natural gas are developed.
