Development of scientific and technological foundation of synthesis gas production from a mixture of hazardous organic waste

Area of application
Processing of sewage sludge of municipal wastewater treatment plants, worn-out tires, unsorted solid waste, including those already accumulated in landfills, and persistent organic pollutants.
Brief description
The purpose of the work is to develop the scientific foundations of modern technology for the production of hydrogen from the hazardous renewable raw materials which is a mixture of the aeration stations sewage sludge contaminated with toxic heavy metals and the rubber crumb of worn-out tires on the basis of plasma-steam-oxygen gasification. Processing of carbonaceous wastes is grounded on their gasification in the oxygen-rich atmosphere with partial addition of steam-water plasma torch energy.
Expected results
This work is considered as supporting to the cycle of research and design works performed by the Institute of Gas of NASU on the processing of hazardous wastes using plasma technologies. In particular, the projects on the level of state order were completed during 2016-17 and 2018-19. As a result of their performance, a pilot sample of a technological line for the processing of hazardous waste with a reactor up to 400 kg capacity of raw material per hour were created. As part of the project will be explored new opportunities to increase energy efficiency of the technological process as they cannot be explored on a large-scale plant. The technology process of high energy efficiently should be the end result of these studies. It allows the production of electricity based on synthesis gas using - as for provide own energy consumption so for external consumers. It will facilitate the commercialization of the development.
Advantages
Exceptional advantage of plasma technologies is a high thermodynamic parameters of the process. That is why it has no restrictions on the quality of carbonaceous raw materials to be gasified. These advantages allow also to convert even the most hazardous chlorine-containing waste. In the case of sewage sludge processing they provide vitrification (encapsulation in a glassy mass of molten slag) the heavy metals that present significant environmental risks in their processing.

Project development
The design documentation for production units is developed and та basic units of plasma-steam equipment for conversion of sewage sludge and other hazardous waste are manufactured.
