Equipment & Facilities:
To carry on the investigations we operate the following equipment:
Own facilities of Dep6:
- The electric arc melting furnances for alloy preparation.
Pouring to the water-cooled cooper chill mould is possible.
- Resistance laboratory furnaces (of chamber, shaft, and tube types) for annealing up to 2200 C in
vacuum or protective gases (argon, helium, etc.), or in air.
Such kinds of heat-treating can be performed there: long term annealing, stepped annealing, etc.,
quenching of alloy pieces in water, oil, or molten metal pool (Ga, Sn, etc.).
- Mechanical works which include machines for turnery, milling, drilling, and as well
abrasive cutting and electric erosion cutting machines.
- The installations for differential thermal analysis up to 2200 C in atmosphere of helium or argon,
or in vacuum (~10-2 torr)pumped out by the diffusion pump. Device operation and data processing
are computer-based. Regime for heating/cooling can be managed from computer program.
- Thermodynamics laboratory equipped with several methods for thermodynamic properties measurements. High-temperature (up to 1500 C) isoperibolic calorimetry to measure enthalpy of mixture for liquid alloys and formation enthalpy for intermetallides, where the calorimeter thermostat stability is better than 0.2 C up to 1500 C. Method of electromotive force measuring
for concentration galvanic cells (up to 1300 C) with solid or liquide electrolytes. Knudsen's effusion method for vapor pressure
mesurements (up to 1500 C). Methods based upon electrical resistivity measurements.
- Techniques and device for melting point measurements by means of Pirrani-Altertum method.
The installation is equipped with the reference-class pyrometer which working range is from 900 to 4000 C,
and the measurement error is of ~5 C at 1400-2000 C).
- X-ray diffractometer DRON-3a with computer aided data recording and processing.
- Metallographic laboratory: grinding and polishing machines; facilities for etching (pickilg)
and electropolishing; optical microscopes MIM-104 and others. Digital camera is here used for image
recording.
- Vickers hardness and microhardness tester.

In collaboration with other departments of the Institute:
- Several methods of chemical analysis, which include such as wet chemical
analysis, fluorescence assay, electrom microprobe.
- Scanning electron microscopes Camebax SX 50 and Superprobe 733.
- Machines for mechanical properties measurements: hardness testing on Rockwell and Brinell; tensile-testing machine INSTRON (5 kN);
bending testing machine; pendulum machine MK-30 for impact toughness testing.
- Equipment for thermo-mechanical theatement: rolling mill DUO-200 (roll diameter of 200 mm, temperature of 1100-1150°C);
crank press for stamping with force up to 1200 kN
