Abstract

The interaction of silicon with various structural modifications of carbon under shock compression was studied. The phase content of the samples was determined by X-ray diffraction. The pressure and temperature of the process were calculated. It was found that the interaction of silicon with graphite and carbon black depended on the composition of the starting mixture and was the most intensive at 50% Si. This is attributed to the dependence of this interaction on the contact area between the reagents, which decreases in the coalescence of molten silicon droplets. The degree of interaction in mixtures of silicon with diamond decreases with higher silicon content, which is due to the dependence of the contact area on composition. Shock compression experiments for diamond–silicon mixtures show that diamonds powders can be subjected to liquid-phase sintering.
