Abstract

An approximate model of indentation by sharp conical or pyramidal elastic indenters is presented, in which the sample is elastically plastically deformed and the material obeys the Mises yield condition. The model generalizes and refines Johnson's core model, based on the concept of the formation of a hydrostatic core adjacent to the indenter. Calculations are made for a number of materials and a comparison with like models is given.
