Abstract

The mixing enthalpies of liquid Al—Ni—Ge, Al—Ni—Si, Al—Ni—Y alloys have been measured by high-temperature isoperibolic calorimetry at 1770 and 1800 K. All investigated ternary systems are characterized by exothermic mixing heat effects. Integral enthalpies of mixing in ternary liquid alloys were calculated by Toop and Bonnier—Caboz models. The best correlation is found between the experimental enthalpies of mixing and the ones predicted by Bonnier—Caboz method. This agreement testifies that thermodynamics of ternary alloys is predominantly defined by interaction between components in the boundary binary systems. The possibility of amorphous alloys formation was estimated using glass-forming tendency (GFT) criterion adapted to ternary alloys. Computed GFT satisfactory predicts field of amorphous alloys existence.
