Abstract

The effect of cutting ShKh15 hardened steel on the element and phase composition of the coating surface layer deposited on the CBN-based tool is studied. Microstructure and oxidation kinetics of the surface layer of the AlN–Ti(Cr)B2 magnetron coating are investigated during both formation and turning. The coating formed by RF magnetron sputtering of AlN–Ti(Cr)B2 target. Formation features of the two-layer tribofilm having nano-size outer layer are examined. The tribofilm phase composition is estimated using layer-by-layer Auger-analysis. Its outer nano-size layer is a glass-like phase in the form of limited solid solutions based on Al2O3 oxides and playing a role of solid lubricant. Thereby, cutting speed increases, the coated tool wear rate decreases compared with uncoated tool.
